Sports stadium in Gothenburg

Slottsskogsvallen Stadium was built in connection with The Gothenburg Tercentennial Jubilee Exposition (celebrating the 300th anniversary of the city’s existence) and it was officially opened on 12 May 1923 by Prince Gustav Adolf. The investor of the stadium was the city of Gothenburg. The architect, Lars Izrael Wahlman (the creator of, amongst other, Tjolöholm castle) designed the facility in 20th century classicistic style – wooden buildings were decorated with the motifs from ancient columns.

Soon after the opening, he stadium has become a source of pride for the city. Apart from the architectural values, it has become famous for its modern race track and football pitch. The facility is included in the register of monuments as an element of historical and cultural heritage.

The stadium was a scene of many major sporting events: here, the legendary Swedish runner Gunder Hägg has improved his world record three times. The facility is still open, with a number of events taking place there: both sporting events (e.g. the annual Göteborgs Varvet semi-marathon) as well as concerts.
The renovation works have covered the entire fence around the facility, built between 1922-1923. It is composed of: a stone wall, made of granite stones, topped with granite covers and steel spans, attached to the stone covers of the wall.

As a result of varying atmospheric and land-water conditions, small fragments of the wall has been subject to local settlement and deformation. Due to water migration, freezing and chipping of the joints, some of the stone covers have detached from the wall structure. Steel spans, executed in the locksmith and blacksmith technique, have corroded in large part.

 

Thanks to the renovations, the stadion surely will again host major and important sports events, as well as become a meeting place for the local community.
