The Monument to the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division on hill 593 at Monte Cassino

COMPLETION DATE: 2018—2020
LOCATION: ITALY

The Monument to the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division on hill 593 at Monte Cassino is another important object for Poland and Polish history. It commemorates 1115 soldiers fallen in the Italian campaign.
Like the Polish War Cemetery at Monte Cassino, this monument required comprehensive conservation and construction works.
The monument in the shape of a high obelisk is built of travertine and placed on a stone platform. It required repairing any damage and defects in stone elements. Any loose items, such as covers, steps or risers, have been dismantled, reassembled and secured.
The inscription plaques with the names of 1115 fallen soldiers on the front wall of the base were dismantled, polished, and the lettering made readable and reinstalled.  The entire obelisk has been washed and treated with fungicides and hydrophobic agents.

In its architectural design, this monument was to create a landscape connection with the Polish cemetery. Monumental stairs lead to the place and at the end of the stairs there is a viewing platform at the top of the hill. Captain Tadeusz Zandfos was the designer and the builder of the monument.

The Monument to the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division has regained its proper splendor and can again remind the next generations of the heroism of Polish soldiers.

We put our heart in stone.
